Stripe payouts on hold? What the risk review actually wants from you

A payout hold feels like theft, but it's usually a risk review with a document list — and the merchants who resolve them fast are the ones who answer the actual question instead of venting at support. The merchants who make it worse open a second account or move money erratically.

Why holds happen

The usual triggers: a volume spike Stripe didn't expect (launch, virality), a dispute cluster, a business model or product change since onboarding, incomplete verification, or selling into a higher-risk category. Each maps to a different information request — the email you got is the diagnosis if you read it as a checklist instead of an accusation.

The first 24 hours

  1. Read the email literally. List every document requested. That list IS the review.
  2. Assemble the evidence pack: supplier invoices, fulfillment/tracking proof, refund policy, business registration, recent bank statement if asked — named and ordered so an analyst can verify in minutes.
  3. Reply once, complete and factual. No over-sharing, no panic, no “I'll sue” — those replies escalate holds into terminations.
  4. Start the cash-flow bridge: know your runway in weeks, cut what can pause, and set up a legitimate secondary processor (properly verified, same entity) so one freeze never strangles you again.
  5. Don't open look-alike accounts or route money oddly — that's the move that maximizes the hold.

FAQ

How long will Stripe hold my money?
Reviews: days to weeks. Rolling reserves: commonly 30–120 days. Terminations: typically up to 90–180 days for the final balance. Your dashboard and emails are the authoritative source for your account.
Should I open a new Stripe account in the meantime?
No. Linked accounts are detected, and circumvention converts a temporary hold into a termination with funds held the maximum term. A properly verified secondary processor is the legitimate alternative.
Can a rolling reserve be negotiated down?
Sometimes — with evidence: falling dispute ratio, fulfillment proof, clean processing history over 60–90 days. Asking in week one with no data doesn't work.
